Here comes sunshine…..
Wake of the Flood was the Grateful Dead’s sixth studio album, released October 15, 1973 — their first new studio record in nearly three years, and the first ever released on their own independent label, Grateful Dead Records. Ron “Pigpen” McKernan had recently passed away, and the group stepped into the studio with a new lineup, welcoming Keith Godchaux on keys and Donna Jean Godchaux on vocals for the first time. Wake of the Flood introduced future live staples like “Eyes of the World,” “Stella Blue,” and “Mississippi Half-Step”.
The album’s title itself comes from a line in its track “Here Comes Sunshine” — “Wake of the flood, laughing water, ’49”— a lyric that nods to real flooding history along the Pacific Northwest’s Columbia River.
